What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy (RLT) is a treatment that uses low levels of red light to reportedly improve your skin’s appearance, like reducing wrinklesscars, redness and acne. It’s also touted to treat other medical conditions.

To date, there’s a lot of ongoing research, publication of small studies and much discussion on the internet about the effectiveness of red light therapy for all types of health uses. Results of some studies do show some promise, but the full effectiveness of red light therapy has yet to be determined.

Other names you might hear to describe red light therapy include:

How did interest in red light therapy evolve?

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) originally began experimenting with red light therapy on plant growth in space and then to help heal wounds in astronauts. Like many developments, other potential uses began to be investigated.

In fact, red light therapy is already widely medically accepted in its use in photodynamic therapy. In this therapy, low-power red laser light is used to activate a photosensitizer drug. The interaction creates a chemical reaction that destroys cells. It’s used to treat some skin conditions, including skin cancer and psoriasis, acne and warts, and other types of cancer.

Now, RLT is being investigated (or already in use) for treating a wide array of health conditions. What’s confusing — and controversial — is the effectiveness of the treatment for the purposes it’s being promoted.

How does red light therapy supposedly work?

Red light therapy is thought to work by acting on the “power plant” in your body’s cells called mitochondria. With more energy, other cells can do their work more efficiently, doing things like repairing skin, boosting new cell growth and enhancing skin rejuvenation. More specifically, certain cells absorb light wavelengths and are stimulated to work.

Morning Routine

Adding a Joovv session to your morning routine can be an excellent way to kickstart your day. Numerous Joovv users report feeling rejuvenated and focused after their treatments, ready to tackle whatever comes their way.

Incorporating red and near-infrared (NIR) light in the morning mimics the natural sunrise lighting, which our bodies are accustomed to. By exposing yourself to this light before UV rays become intense, you can protect your skin from sunburns and prime it for later sun exposure.

Nighttime Routine

The 9-5 workday can be rough and downright exhausting. One of the keys to getting through the daily grind is finding ways to relax. Integrating Joovv into your nighttime routine can be an excellent way to unwind and recover, both physically and mentally, from the day's stresses.

Pre-Workout

Using Joovv before exercising can be a game-changer for enhancing muscle performance. By utilizing pre-exercise light therapy, you can take proactive steps to optimize your workout and minimize potential muscle damage and strain.

When you engage in intense physical activity, your muscles undergo stress and micro-tears occur. These micro-tears are a natural part of the muscle-building process, but they can lead to inflammation, soreness, and longer recovery times. However, by using light therapy before your workout, you can help mitigate these effects and optimize your performance.

Post-Workout

Joovv can also be used after an exercise session or as part of your regular training routine. The purpose of post-exercise treatments is to speed up the recovery process by accelerating your muscle adaptation to exercise. Red light therapy after training also aids the body in processing acute inflammation caused by working out.

Breathwork Routine

Combining Joovv treatments with a daily breathwork routine has become a popular and powerful wellness practice for many Joovvers. The saying "two is better than one" holds true with this combination, as both red light and breathwork have similar effects, such as reducing pain, promoting relaxation and stress relief, and supporting restful sleep.

Here's a helpful video guide on a simple breathing exercise to pair with any Joovv session.

Bottom Line

These are just a handful of the many ways you can incorporate Joovv into your daily routine. No matter the timing or method you choose to incorporate Joovv,  it is important to listen to your body to determine the best treatment time for you. Also keep in mind that sticking to a consistent routine is essential for attaining the best possible outcomes with red light therapy.
